Saint Martyr Mar Shimun Bar Sabbae

3rd century

Saint Martyr Mar Shimun Bar Sabbae, the Catholicos of Selekvia-Ktesifon in Persia, was a revered figure whose counsel was sought by the ruling Tsar. During the reign of Tsar Shapur II, a heavy tax was levied on Christians in 340, which led to persecution when some refused to pay. Mar Shimun, known for his compassion, was arrested and pressured to collect the tax from his followers or to renounce his faith and worship the sun. He refused, declaring his soul belonged only to the immortal God.

As persecution intensified, many Christians were imprisoned. Tsar Shapur, failing to break Mar Shimun’s resolve, ordered the execution of all Christian prisoners before him. Mar Shemmon blessed the martyrs who faced death fearlessly. On April 14, 340, after witnessing the slaughter, Mar Shemmon was himself executed. The week of Easter that year saw continued executions, resulting in thousands of Christian martyrs, including bishops and priests. Mar Shemmon’s steadfast faith amidst such trials remains a powerful testament to his sanctity.
