Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo, possessed incredible patience throughout her life. When her parents married her to Patricius, a violent pagan, Monica never despaired. Instead, she repaid Patricius’s malice with charity and piety, gradually chipping away at his hardened heart until he converted.
Monica’s oldest son, Augustine, fell into a life of sin and heresy while studying in Carthage. Despite his hostility toward her, Monica followed her son across continents, praying and fasting for him unceasingly.
After endless years, Monica’s intercession bore fruit: Augustine repented and became a saint, theologian, and Doctor of the Church like no other.

Saint Monica Prayer for Mothers
Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine, you perseveringly pursued your wayward son not with wild threats but with prayerful cries to heaven.
Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray.
Amen.
