As a boy, Augustine first encountered sin when he and his friends stripped a pear tree, “not to eat the fruit, but simply to destroy it.” This seemingly small choice set the tone of his youth, escalating to wanton hedonism and heresy throughout his years of study.
Then, at age 31, Augustine had one of the greatest conversions in history. By the intercession of his mother Monica and St. Ambrose, Augustine radically transformed into a remarkable bishop, theologian, and Doctor of the Church.
His writings on original sin, free will, and the nature of man have profoundly shaped Catholic theology and souls.

Holy Spirit Prayer of Saint Augustine
Saint Augustine (354-430) created this poetic prayer to
the Holy Spirit:
Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,
That my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit,
That my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit,
That I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit,
To defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit,
That I always may be holy.
