Saints Philip and James the Less 1st Century Saint Philip was one of Christ’s first disciples, called shortly after the Baptism of our Lord in the Jordan. Based solely on the Scriptures, Philip seemed to play a distinct role among the first apostles. Tradition tells us that Philip later evangelized at Phrygia and at Hierapolis was fastened to a cross and then stoned to death. Saint James the Less, on the other hand, was from Cana of Galilee. Author of one of the Epistles, we read in 1 Corinthians 15:7 that James was favored with an appearance of the Risen Christ. He later became the bishop of Jerusalem. It is recorded that he is visited by Saint Paul and talks to Saint Peter at the Meeting of the Apostles. Refusing to deny the divinity of Christ in front of the Jews, at ninety-six James was thrown down the terrace of the temple and clubbed to death uttering the words: “Lord, forgive them; for they know not what they do!” Now both reign in heaven, praising God for all eternity.
