Saint Perfectus of Cordova

1st century

Saint Perfectus, a highly educated priest fluent in Arabic, served at the basilica of Saint Acisclus in Cordova, Spain. In 850, during the Moorish rule, he was asked by Moors to compare Christ and Mohammed. Initially hesitant, he spoke candidly under assurance of no harm. His frank words about Mohammed, spoken in Arabic, later led to his arrest when he revisited the town. In prison, he embraced his fate with joy and courage, even prophesying the death of the court eunuch Nazar.

As the Ramadan fast ended, Perfectus was questioned again during a feast. He boldly reiterated his earlier statements, which resulted in his beheading and subsequent desecration by the crowd. Within a year, the eunuch Nazar died as foretold. The martyrdom of Saint Perfectus marked the beginning of a series of fifty martyrdoms in Cordova from 850 to 859, documented by Saint Eulogius of Cordova.
