Saint Bernadette Soubirous

(January 7, 1844 – April 16, 1879)

Saint Bernadette Soubirous was born to a poor family in Lourdes, France. Despite her struggles with health and education, she experienced 18 visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary starting on February 11, 1858. These apparitions instructed her to build a chapel and revealed a miraculous spring, leading to Lourdes becoming a major Marian pilgrimage site. The Lady of the visions identified herself as the “Immaculate Conception,” a title Bernadette understood only after explanation. Despite initial skepticism, the Church authenticated the visions in 1862.

Bernadette faced much adversity, including public scrutiny and health issues. She eventually joined the Sisters of Notre Dame of Nevers, where she served until her death at 35. Canonized in 1933, Saint Bernadette’s life is a testament to faith amidst suffering, as millions seek healing at Lourdes, a sanctuary she established through her unwavering belief.
