1382

Tradition holds that St. Luke the Evangelist painted this icon of Mary while she recounted the life of Jesus to him, which would form Luke’s Gospel.

This beautiful icon would later defend entire armies of Christians.

First, it was discovered by St. Helen, who gifted it to her son Constantine. After the icon miraculously saved Constantinople from ruin, it fell into the care of Charlemagne and rescued his small army with a cloud over his enemies.

In the Tartar invasion of 1382, it was Our Lady’s turn to be protected. Prince Ladislaus of Poland hid her icon within a small chapel in Czestochowa, where she is visited today by millions of pilgrims.

Prayer to Our Lady of Czestochowa

Holy Mother of Czestochowa, Thou art full of grace, goodness and mercy.

I consecrate to Thee all my thoughts, words and actions–my soul and body.

I beseech Thy blessings and especially prayers for my salvation.

Today, I consecrate myself to Thee, Good Mother, totally–with body and soul amid joy and sufferings to obtain for myself and others Thy blessings on this earth and eternal life in Heaven.

Amen.
