Pope Saint Paul VI was born Giovanni Battista Montini near Brescia in northern Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1920 and was named the Vatican Secretary of State in 1924, where he worked for thirty years. In 1954, he was appointed Archbishop of Milan. He oversaw the rebuilding of the local church from the fallout of World War II.

When elected Pope in 1963, he concluded Vatican II, visited the Holy Land, initiated the World Synod of Bishops, and penned Humanae Vitae. Pope Paul VI died at Castel Gandolfo in 1978.
