c. 540-604

Saint Gregory the Great was born into a wealthy Roman family and rose from prefect to pope in 590.

Initially reluctant to lead, Pope Gregory became a transformative figure in the Church. He emphasized missionary work, reformed the liturgy, and was renowned for his compassion toward the poor.

A prolific writer and skilled administrator, Gregory’s influence extended beyond the faithful as people increasingly looked to the Church for leadership.

Pope Gregory’s legacy includes the development of Gregorian chant and his immediate canonization upon his death, and he is the patron of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.

Saint Gregory the Great, pray for us!

Prayer

Father, you guide your people with kindness and govern us with love.

By the prayers of Saint Gregory give the spirit of wisdom to those you have called to lead your Church.

May the growth of your people in holiness be the eternal joy of our shepherds; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.
